Brit Awards: Dua Lipa wins two awards
Dua Lipa capped off a stunning 2017 by winning two awards for British Breakthrough Artist and British Female Solo Artist at the Brit Awards last night.
The New Rules star was nominated for five awards and paid tribute to women for their contribution to music and society in support for the victims of sexual harassment.
She said: ‘Every single female that has been on this stage before me, that has given girls like me – not just girls in the music industry – but girls in society, a place to be inspired by, to look up and have allowed us to dream
‘Here’s to more women on these stages, more women winning awards and more women taking over the world.’
What is Dua Lipa’s background? The singer-songwriter, 22, had a wonderful 2017 in the music charts after only releasing her first album last June. The London native was born to Albanian parents from Kosovo who immigrated in the 1990’s, and in 2008 her family returned to Kosovo. Dua Lipa is actually her real name – her father’s name is Dukagjin Lipa.
When she was 15, she returned to the UK in the hope of becoming a singer. Dua Lipa has been a regular chart topper since 2015, but she has been uploading covers to YouTube since she was only 14-years-old. In 2015 she was signed Warner Music Group and in August that year released her first single New Love, but her first hit was with Be The One in October 2015.
New Rules topped the UK’s streaming charts on Spotify as she was the UK’s most-streamed female artists of 2017. Incredibly, she beat Beyonce and Taylor Swift to become Spotify’s most-streamed female of 2017. New Rules is a musical instruction manual for people tempted to contact their exes, and was streamed 464 million times worldwide in 2017. Dua Lipa released her self-titled debut studio album in 2017 and the album reached number 5 in the UK as well as number 3 in Ireland. She has also had 453 million streams for Scared To Be Lonely in 2017 too.
As a rising star on the British pop scene, Dua Lipa is estimated to be worth $3 million (£2.2 million), according to Celebrity Net Worth. She has amassed her fortune from record sales, touring and working as a model too.
