Thaci: Agreement has a meaning only when mutual recognition happens
The President of Kosovo Hashim Thaci told the media prior to his meetings with the EU High Representative Frederica Mogherini and the President of Serbia Aleksandar Vucic that the final agreement will happen with mutual recognition of the two countries and that there will be no division of Kosovo or displacement of people.
“We are entering a new phase of the dialogue for the reach of the final agreement for peace with Serbia. This process will mark progress for Kosovo state, for Serbia and for the stability of the region,” Thaci said.
“I am aware that we will face great obstacles, but I hope that we will reach progress. This conflict is unsustainable, we have to move forward in our Euro-Atlantic future. This dialogue has European spirit, Euro-Atlantic values and also will lead toward economic development,” he added.
He reiterated his position that multi-ethnicity will be kept in Kosovo and added that threats with war and refugees are absurd.
“This dialogue has a meaning only when mutual recognition and Kosovo’s membership at the UN and other international organizations happen. No one can relate the issue of the dialogue with the other issues in the world,” Thaci said.
Asked if he is going to raise the issue of the unification of Presevo Valley with Kosovo, Thaci said “Kosovo is united in favor of the dialogue. The President and Parliament are in favor of negotiations, are in favor of demarcation of the 430 kilometers borderline between Kosovo and Serbia, which means also the inclusion of the Valley.”
Thaci also spoke about the announced visit of the Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic to Kosovo.
“The institutions of the country have already made their decision. I respect the legitimate interest of the Serbian representatives to discuss with the Serb community. I hope that there will be positive messages of good neighborly relations, a coexistence that would enable a final agreement,” Thaci said.
